National Service

I was flipping through some channels on tv when suddenly a channel caught my attention...It was some movie on national service. U heard me right! a movie on national service! The first thing that came into my mind...omg they are getting desperate! To my absolute horror! the movie was filmed in my campsite, Kem Sentosa, Chenderiang, Tapah. Go ahead laugh..laugh all you want... YES i was the 'lucky' few chosen for national service.

The next thing i know...my friend, Zul from national service gave me a miss call. So i actually sat thru the whole movie. It brought back many fond memories i had in national service. OKay so if you asked me bout national service i would have said it was horrible, the food was not edible, there was NO HOT WATER! But overall i had fun and went thru many experiences that never in my life i would ever do. I bet swee leen would laugh at me saying this.

The moment i arrived at the campsite..i totally felt i was in jail. I went into the dorm..and it seems to me the malay girls were grouped to one corner of the dorm. the chinese one side and the indian another corner! ( so much for their goal of racial harmony) i was of course a ' lain-lain' neither here nor there...so where was i to sleep? any empty bed available. I felt like crying! The first culture shock...NO ONE SPOKE ENGLISH! i remember asking the girl next to me if she knew the time...but she couldnt understand me...! Dont we all learn english in school?? During mealtime, we each had a metal plate, a pair of cutlerys and a plastic cup. We kept them in our locker. Brought it down evrytime we want to eat. Like jail right? The first week was just unbearable and i was constantly thinking of home...and you guys went to genting without me!! SOBS!

Eventually i made friends...actually a lot of friends. I got used to evrything there, then it didnt seem so bad anymore. We went thru loads of physical activities like the obstacle course ( i faked a migraine to skip it LOL!) flying fox,kayak-ing, taekwondo and marching (URGH), got thrown into the dark jungle with only 2 torchlights for a company of 40 and learnt how to use the compass. We had to applied all our knowledge we learnt in our last activity before we 'graduate' from national service. We were again thrown into the jungle with a compass and suppose to find our way to the campsite using our compass. Unfortunately i was the leader a.k.a compass holder! i didnt get lost k!! haha thats also cause we were the last to leave...so there were tracks left behind by the other companies! HAHA!

I think the best eye opening experience is during community service. We got to visit rural areas and contribute our part to society through 'gotong-royong'. I got to feel what it was like to live in the kampung and felt the 'togetherness' among the neighbours, it was like a big family. Their kind hospitality and generosity makes u feel at home.

So you see...national service has its bad parts and also its good parts...but overall its an enriching experience that is hard to forget...i still remember it like it was yesterday...

For those who are looking to lose weight and wants to get a tan...look no further..i think national service is the best place for you! haha...

There will be NO pictures of me during national service...! but...

* i dream of being with you forever* I HEART EDWARD CULLEN!!
